CHRISTMAS HAS ALMOST BEGUN!!!!!

X Factor ruined my evening.

November 16th, 2008

This might sound off, but i’ve drunk about 6 cans of coke this evening, i’m a bit hyped up.

I recorded ‘We Are Not Amused’, the 60th birthday show for Prince Charles. I was sitting here thoroughly enjoying the show, laughing my arse off, then suddenly they announce “we’ll be back after the X Facotr results”…are you kidding me!!!!!! I didn’t know the show was in 2 parts! Now I won’t get to see the 2nd part, i missed it! Why on earth is X Factor still on, it annoys the crap out of my any time but now…words cannot describe, I officially hate the X factor.

The C Word

October 15th, 2008

I’ve noticed the ‘c word’ being used a lot recently and I’m quite shocked. It’s utterly inappropriate. Yes I’m talking about Christmas.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas, I love the build up more than they actual day. But there are limits. My Co-Op started selling advent calenders and Christmas chocolate a month ago. Disney is already advertising its Christmas holiday packages (although to be fair that is something that has to be pre booked so I’ll let that one slide). And Argos have already released its Christmas catalog. It’s October people! It’s only just reached half way though October! We’re not America, we’re not supposed to be overly commercial at this wonderful time of year. Be British!

As I said i love the build up to Christmas but I don’t want it to suffer from overkill. I love the cold christmasy nights, the cheesy music, being able to wrap up in scarfs hats and gloves, the eternal question”will it snow?” (with the eternal answer, “no”), the lights. I’m getting excited just thinking about. And then the finishing touch, the Coca Cola Christmas advert. When I see that advert Christmas will officially begin. But hopefully I won’t be seeing it for about a month.

Changing the subject, I’ve spent the last week playing Lego Batman on the Wii. You have to get this game. Its so addictive. To be honest I finished the core story game the day after it was released (I got it the day before release) and I’m now completing the game by getting the extras. Its so good. I’m still completely in love with the Joker, even when he’s made of Lego.

I brought the Boyzone Greatest Hits album on the spur of the moment earlier. Apart from “No Matter What” I don’t think I’ve listened to any of the songs for years and years and yet I remember all the words. I wasn’t even a huge Boyzone fan. I just missed the boat on that one and unfortunately became a Westlife fan (in hindsight Boyzone are clearly superior). The only problem at the moment is that whenever I sing along to Boyzone I can’t doing my Ronan Keating impression (which sounds oddly like my Anastasia impression), its quite odd, thank Bob I’m alone lol.

Something for the ladies now Humanana Humanana. Big muscles don’t’ normally do anything for me but woh… just woh..

And now for some fun:

I have had the most amazing three days. I’m sure the rest of the week will let me down in unimaginable ways, because that’s how my life works but it won’t matter because of these three days.

I’ll start with the small things. Yesterday I got my hair cut and dyed which I’ve needed for a long time. I like my hair short and recently I’ve had it dyed blonde and purple. It now looks amazing, if I do say so myself. And today I went shopping and had a good time, which is rare.
But these two things are just icing on the cake. On Sunday I was lucky enough to go to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Birthday in the Park. I have been excited about this for ages. Performers included John Barrowman, Lee Mead, Idina Menzel, Jason Donovan, Ruthie Henshall and Elaine Paige. Yes Elaine Paige! I am a huge Cats fan, in fact huge isn’t the word, it’s more of a life consuming obsession, but in a good way. So you can imagine how much seeing Elaine Page singing ‘Memory’ meant to me.

I’m going to start my mini review off with the bad points of the show. There are only two I can think of, they are Joss Stone and Denise Van Outen. Joss Stone ’sang’ ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. I’ve heard bad versions of this song but this was a really really bad version of this wonderful song. I can’t describe how disappointed I was. Thank bob she only did one song. And Denise Van Outen…well…she sung ‘Take That Look Off Your Face’ and I was unimpressed. I never had an opinion of her but then I heard her murder ‘Take Me or Leave Me’ in that god-awful version of Rent released recently and lost any future respect for her. Plus she looked ill, she was so thin, it was painful to look out.

Now onto the goodies. Firstly John Barrowman. He can get away with anything as long as he flashes a smile. And he knows it. Barrowman was a fantastic host; he kept the audience entertained even during the various technical difficulties. And his singing was wonderful too; he sung ‘Sunset Boulevard’, ‘Oh What A Circus’ and ‘A Perfect Year’ with Ruthie Henshall. Henshall was fantastic as well. She and Barrowman have such wonderful chemistry on stage.
Steve Balsamo performed ‘Gethsemane’ and was true to the original version. For years my favourite version of that song was Michael Ball’s version at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 50th birthday concert (let’s be honest, you can’t really fault anything Michael Ball sings), but I am defiantly warming up to the original, it’s amazing what a live performance can do to you.
Idina Menzel was one of the acts I was most excited about seeing. I adore her as Maureen in Rent, and it helps that she’s gorgeous. She performed ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ and ‘Unexpected Song’, she look fabulous and performed both songs perfectly.
Lee Mead…where to begin… I was vaguely aware of him before but I didn’t know anything about him. I am now officially a fan. Perhaps I was swept up by all the fans that surrounded me, including the cutest little girl who had a Lee Mead poster she held up everything he came on stage. He sung an impressive four songs and I’ll admit, when he came out to do a Joseph medley I was screaming along with the best of them. Especially when he came out in THE coat, just amazing.
I have to mention Duncan James, he performed Mr. Mistoffelees and it was pretty good. As a rule I am against songs from Cats being performed without the dancers (unless its ‘The Jellicle Ball’ or ‘Memory’) as I think the real magic is lost, but I enjoyed his performance. I think it was helped by the bubble machines working during the song.
When I arrived at Hyde Park I could hear some of the acts warming up. I heard someone practicing ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and I thought the Phantom sounded very familiar. Turns out it was Ramin Karimloo who I love. He is my Phantom. I’ve seen him live three times now, twice in the show and once at this concert. His voice is heavenly, no-one compares, it’s practically orgasmic. Thank you whoever decided he should be in the show, I applaud you for your decision.

Finally, Elaine Paige, almost my whole reason for going. As mentioned I am a huge Cats fan. Being able to see Elaine Paige sing ‘Memory’ live is like my Everest as a Cats fan. It got near the end of the show and she hadn’t been on yet. On the program it said Memory was the second to last song so I expected it. But then John Barrowman came out and said “and now to finish the show” and he introduced Lee Mead doing the Joseph Medley. I panicked; they’d done ‘Buenos Aires’ which wasn’t in the program. I suddenly thought “what if Elaine Paige couldn’t make it? What if ‘Buenos Aires’ was put in to cover her?!” Lee Mead finished and they did ‘The Light at the End of the Tunnel’ and I’m still panicking. But then John Barrowman came to the rescue and introduced her. She was amazing, spectacular, a hundred times better than I expected. I still can’t believe I’ve seen Elaine Paige live! It’ll take a while to settle in.

I want to finish by thanking Andrew Lloyd Webber. You may think I’m being soppy but musicals are so important to me, they are a huge part of my identity. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t decided to watch Cats on a whim all those years ago. This concert reaffirmed how much I love musicals. I hate to sound clique (and a bit corny) but Andrew Lloyd Webber, thank you for the music.

When the Devil is too busy…

August 27th, 2008

Can you fancy a song? no seriously… I recently discovered a song called “When You’re Evil” by Voltaire and i love this song. It’s been in my head for about 4 days straight which is quite impressive for me. It’s been briefly interrupted by the Warrington Volkswagen hold music (don’t ask). But it’s not just the whole stuck in my head thing which makes me ask that utterly random question. There’s these weird feelings and the sneaky smiles…

Perhaps its association, I found the song via a Joker fan video, and the Joker is my current obsession. I haven’t known obsession like this for ages. And the cruel irony is I’m a Marvel girl! I have a box of comics under the bed, all X-Men, I’ve never read a DC Comic in my life.. But the Joker has me completely hooked. I can’t really describe what it is about him. I always seem to fall for the sadistic characters.
Yes I’m a bit off, who cares?

Moving on…I went to see We Will Rock You for the second time last Thursday. Everyone has to see this musical. There are countless musicals i think everyone should see but We Will Rock You is one that I think appeals to everyone. I mean who doesn’t love Queen? Words can’t describe the feeling that goes over you when the title song starts. The characters are all so larger than life, Killer Queen is awesome, look at her:

And, she winked at me! We were in the front row (front row!) and Killer Queen winked at me!! This is one of my top musical moments (the top one being when I was the person who hadn’t heard of a Jellicle Cat, its very very unnerving having all those Jellicle eyes judging you). I’m still buzzing from it.
And the way they introduce Bohemian Rhapsody…(spoiler alert)…The show is over, they’ve done their bows, the audience is going crazy but wait…they haven’t sung Bohemian Rhapsody…how can you have a Queen musical without Bohemian Rhapsody!? Then suddenly a screen appears with one question… “Do you want a Bohemian Rhapsody?” They audience goes crazy, seriously crazy, so the sign says “oh…all right then…” Then the whole cast come out and perform the crap out of Bohemian Rhapsody. They did Freddie proud.
Plus, look what i got, my new favorite accessory:

Random note, according to scientific study Alan Rickman has the perfect voice, swoon.

Link time Man’s ‘pants’ password is changed via the Beeb. And they say the British don’t have a sense of humor.

I knew this day would come…
